Tips for changing your oilChanging the oil in your car can seem simple. Many people do it on their own all the time. However, a simple mishap can make the project go sour.

Our mechanics recommend following these tips to make the project go more smoothly. If you are hesitant during any step of the process, they also recommend you bring it to our repair shop instead of risking any serious malfunctions.

• Read your owner’s manual. This will describe what type of oil and oil filter you will need.
• Your daily driving may be considered severe or harsh driving, therefore go by the standards listed for that in your manual. For example, some newer vehicles say to change your oil every 6,000 miles. However this may not be ideal for your car and typical driving. Generally, changing your oil every 3,000 is a good practice.
• If the engine is cold, start it and let it run for five or ten minutes to warm the oil. If it’s hot, wait at least 30 minutes to avoid getting burned.
• Always use jack stands. Never work under a car that’s supported by a jack only.
• Don’t use a filter wrench, always hand-tighten the filter.
• Line up or mark all the oil bottles you’ll need for the fill so you don’t lose count.

Remember, the longer you go without a mechanic performing your oil change, the longer other regular maintenance doesn’t occur, such as: tire pressure, other fluid checks, necessary greasing/lubing. Keeping everything well maintained ensures your car stays on the road longer.
